Lesson 202 - The Human Calorie requirements
The concept of getting the proper amount of calories in your diet is very important. Often this basic requirement is not very well understood. I have seen all kinds of diets that are either lacking in calories or are way too high. The thing that makes getting the correct calorie level a little confusing is that the level required for each person is a little different. It will depend on whether you are a man or woman and your level of physical activity. The most important point is that you need to get enough calories for you. Not getting enough will leave you hungry while getting too many will cause you to gain unwanted weight. So how do you determine what is the right level of calories for yourself? As a starting point it is usually recommended for men to get about 15 calories per pound of body weight and for women it would be 10 calories. So if you weigh 150 pounds you would need about 2250 calories if you are a man and about 1500 if you are a woman. Obviously, this is just a generalized starting point. The calories that you take in are what provide your fuel to operate so you need to get enough calories to keep yourself moving each day. At first it is best to track the calories that you are taking in so that you can determine where you are. Over time tracking will no longer be required as eventually you will instinctively be able to tell if you are getting enough. This "instinct" is something that will come to you as you get closer to your true diet. How do you track your calories? I will talk about that in lesson 203. Another thing that needs to be considered is the type of calories as this can have a big impact on health. In the next lesson I will discuss how these calories should be distributed. Go to lesson 203 – The calorie-nutrient ratio.
